The Sound of History:

  • Released in 1965, The Sound of Music is one of the most iconic and beloved movie musicals in history. Its production, release, and cultural impact are deeply tied to both Hollywood history and broader social and political contexts of the 20th century.
  • Released during a turbulent time in the U.S. (Vietnam War, Civil Rights era), the film’s themes of resistance to tyranny, family unity, and moral conviction resonated strongly. It became a global phenomenon, particularly loved in the UK, Asia, and Latin America.
  • In 2001, it was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
  • The movie and musical are based on the real-life story of the von Trapp family in Austria in the years leading up to World War II, and reports suggest that the real Maria von Trapp visited the set and was reportedly pleased with the portrayal, despite marked differences from reality.
  • The movie also happens to be one of the best selling VHS and DVD titles of all time, making it no surprise that a 4K Ultra HD version is on its way.
